Bhagwan Swaminarayan was a remarkable figure in nineteenth-century India. A social reformer who campaigned against female infanticide and sati (the burning of widows along with their husbands); a child prodigy, who, at the age of eight, debated and defeated some of India's greatest scholars; and a divine figure revered by millions as Supreme God; Bhagwan Swaminarayan has left an indelible imprint on Indian history and world religion. Mahatma Gandhi has said, "The work which Swaminarayan could do in Gujarat [a state of India], the rulers by their might could not do and would not be able to do."

A contemporary of the British presence in India, Bhagwan Swaminarayan is a well-documented historical figure, best known for his spiritual ministry. Bhagwan Swaminarayan's miraculous life, which includes a seven-year journey deep into the Himalayas as a teenage yogi, attracted nearly two million followers during his lifetime. Preaching the importance of pure devotion to God, Bhagwan Swaminarayan revitalized Hinduism in nineteenth-century India. He established a religious movement which has today become one of the world's most dynamic Hindu denominations.

Sadhu Mukundcharandas does an excellent job of presenting representative highlights from Bhagwan Swaminarayan's life in this well-researched and meticulously documented history. Interspersed between historical facts and timelines are insightful stories from Bhagwan Swaminarayan's life. For an introductory overview of Bhagwan Swaminarayan and the religious movement he founded, Bhagwan Swaminarayan An Introduction is an ideal companion.

Bhagwan Swaminarayan An Introduction eBook Sadhu Mukundcharandas

This book is definitely ideal for a bird's eye view of Swaminarayan. It won't narrate a lot of popular incidents from his life, but it'll give you a chronological overview of what happened. I enjoyed it because I am approaching the Swaminarayan faith from the outside to learn more about it, and so it made more sense for me to get an overview instead of getting bogged down in more intimate details about festivals he celebrated. Also, the book is written so that you don't need to know much, if anything, about the Swaminarayan religion. They mention many times the names of different swamis who were Swaminarayan's close associates. To be frank, I could hardly tell any of their names apart, but it didn't make a difference to me.

Also, it took me about a few pages to realize this, but Ghanshyam, Nilkanth, and Sahajanand are all different names of Swaminarayan.

I enjoyed the content of the book a lot. In particular, I'm always happy to see religious reformers taking liberal stands on issues like women's rights. It definitely is positive to see that there were people like this in India long before the modern feminist movement. For people with background in Hindu philosophy, they will definitely appreciate the chapter on Swaminarayan's philosophy, which bears a resemblance to Ramanuja's philosophy.

Bhagwan Swaminarayan An Introduction eBook Sadhu Mukundcharandas Reviews

I first came across Swaminarayan years ago, when I saw an IMAX film called "Mystic India." The movie was about Swaminarayan when he was a much younger teenager traveling across India. The film was great and inspired me to get this book! I enjoyed reading it because I love learning about different spiritual personalities and this book was just that. It cites many British officials and historical documents, lending an authenticity to the amazing story. I most definitely recommend this book for anyone interested in learning more about this particular individual's life!
I am proud to recommend this book without even the slightest hesitation. It is definitely the best book that I have read in many years. I loved the storyline about Swaminarayan. Part of me still has my doubts about whether he truly was as he is described, but there is certainly a lot of evidence that he was, at the least, a historical figure. I loved, loved, loved reading about his teenage journey and the manner in which he inspired so many individuals to engage wholly in their personal spiritual quest. As an earlier reviewer mentioned, this book lacks more intimate details about his day-to-day life and focuses more on the accomplishments and major, defining events of Swaminarayan's life. I loved reading about Swaminarayan so much that I have actually decided to order some other books that describe his life in greater detail!
